National Health Center Week is a time to recognize and celebrate the essential role that Community Health Centers (CHCs) play in providing comprehensive primary care services to underserved communities across the world.

This week highlights the commitment and passion of CHC staff, board members, and supporters who make it possible to provide quality, comprehensive healthcare services to more than 31.5 million patients across nearly 15,000 communities annually.

The Critical Role of Health Centers in Community Health

Community Health Centers serve over 31.5 million people in more than 14,000 locations nationwide. These centers are often the only source of primary care for vulnerable populations, particularly in rural areas where the nearest doctor or hospital can be over 50 miles away. CHCs provide a lifeline to:

  • Almost 400,000 veterans
  • 1 in 9 children
  • Nearly 1.4 million people without homes
  • Roughly 3.6 million seniors

By offering services such as dental care, mental health care, substance use services, and behavioral health care, CHCs break down barriers to care and address the social drivers of health. This comprehensive approach not only prevents illness but also promotes health equity, making CHCs crucial innovators and problem solvers in the healthcare landscape.

National Health Center Week is an opportunity to celebrate the profound impact of Community Health Centers and the dedicated professionals who support them.

As we recognize their contributions, let’s also advocate for the policies and funding necessary to sustain their vital work. By doing so, we ensure that health centers can continue to provide high-quality care to those who need it most, fostering healthier, more equitable communities.
